Objection Handling: The Complete Playbook for Modern Sales Teams

Every objection a prospect raises is data. The worst salespeople treat objections as attacks to be deflected. The average salesperson treats them as hurdles to be cleared. The best salespeople treat them as information about what the prospect actually needs to move forward. The difference in framing produces radically different outcomes — because the response that works is almost always the one that addresses the real concern rather than the stated one.

The four types of objections

All objections fall into one of four categories: price, timing, need, and trust. Understanding which type you are dealing with determines the right response.

Price objections ("It's too expensive," "We don't have budget right now"): Almost always a value gap, not a budget gap. See our dedicated guide to price objections.

Timing objections ("Let's revisit next quarter," "We're in a freeze right now"): Usually a combination of missing urgency and competing priorities. The question is whether the pain is real enough to justify changing the timeline — and if not, what would make it real.

Need objections ("We're already doing this with [existing tool]," "I'm not sure this solves our problem"): A signal that you have not yet established the gap between the current state and the desired state clearly enough. Return to discovery, not pitch.

Trust objections ("We've been burned by vendors like this before," "How do we know you can actually deliver"): Require evidence — references, case studies, pilots, proof of concept. Cannot be talked away.

The LAER framework

LAER — Listen, Acknowledge, Explore, Respond — is one of the most reliable objection-handling frameworks because it forces the rep to fully process the objection before responding. Listen without interrupting. Acknowledge the concern ("That makes sense — a lot of the teams we work with raised the same concern"). Explore to find the real concern ("Can I ask — when you say timing, is it more about budget cycles or competing priorities?"). Then respond to what you actually heard, not what you expected to hear.

Objection handling scripts that actually work

When they say "Let me think about it": "Of course. To make sure I give you something useful to think about — what's the main thing that's giving you pause?" This surfaces the real objection without pressure.

When they say "We already have something like this": "What's working well about it, and is there anything it doesn't quite solve?" Almost always surfaces a genuine gap.

When they say "Your competitor does this for less": "That's worth understanding. What's their approach to [the specific differentiator most relevant to this prospect]?" Moves the conversation to value rather than price.

When they say "I need to get buy-in from my team": "Who else will be involved in the decision? I'd love to make sure they have what they need to evaluate this properly." This is how you get multi-threaded rather than single-threaded.

Real-time coaching for objection handling

The challenge with objection handling is that the right response depends heavily on context — which type of objection you are facing, what you know about this prospect's specific situation, and what has been said earlier in the conversation. Real-time AI coaching can surface the relevant framework at the right moment, but the rep still needs to execute it.

In Koachly's implementation, when a specific objection type is detected (price language, timing deflection, competitor mention), the Smart Whisper panel suggests a response path based on the conversation context and the company's playbook. See how it works in practice or review the 7 most common objections with specific response frameworks.
